The London Challenge Residential Experience

What Are the Benefits?

A residential experience can be very powerful in developing independence and self-organisation, and in building team relationships between young people and between them and adults. In a school context the relationships built can support the ethos of the school. The best way to explain the benefits of a residential experience is to let some of the staff, pupils and tutors who have been involved in the programme of courses speak for themselves.

Comments from teachers …

‘The most noticeable impact on the young people was their attitude to each other.  When they moved into year 10 they shared, worked as a team and there is far less of the petty in fighting for chairs, equipment etc!’

‘We learnt more about the children in the four days than we would have learnt in 6 months at school.’

‘Racial barriers were broken down through students sharing a room and activities. Greater understanding of cultures and links made which continue outside school after the trip.’

‘Opportunity for staff to learn about each other as well as about the students.’

And from students…

‘Actually being able to see it makes it much easier to understand’

’I would like to have stayed a lot longer … a whole year perhaps!’

‘I made new friends and we learnt to work as a team’

‘One thing I am very proud about it the kayaking and gorge walking.  Before I did these activities I was tremendously afraid of deep water but after doing it I felt safe.’

‘It was fun!’
